We recycle PC baseunits, terminals, laptops and tablets, no matter the age or condition. Our process incorporates:

Desktop PCs

We apply the waste heirarchy upon receipt of your baseunits at our recycling centre. That way, we can quickly and accurately assess whether to re-use or physically recycle each PC. At the same time, we remove every hard disk from every PC and these are then cleared of data (See "Hard Disk Destruction" for more details).

• We re-use more modern systems, re-distributing them inside the UK. Their hard disks are wiped and the PC's hardware is tested to make sure it is working. It's also PAT tested.
• Equipment that is simply too old or beyond repair is dis-assembled with the constituent components sent on to refineries and scrap metal yards. Hazardous materials such as Polychlorinated Bi-Phenals are also recovered from older equipment. There's more on our recycling processes here.

Laptops

As with Desktop PCs, we assess laptops as soon as they arrive at our facility and set those aside that are in good physical condition and not too old. Hard Disks are removed from every device upon arrival, for seperate destruction.

• The laptops considered most suitable for re-use are tested to make sure they work. Those that have faults end up being used for parts.
• The intricate nature of laptops, coupled with the fact that they contain all the components on a single main board make them very difficult to repair when faulty. Consequently, older units or units that don't work or can't be repaired economically are stripped down into component form. One thing to note about laptops is that even the most modern ones contain hazardous materials. Back lights may have changed to more sustainable solutions, but the batteries still require heavy metals in order to function as intended, making them hazardous waste.

Tablets and Terminals

A key issue with both Tablet and Terminal systems is that they typically contain a single main board that does everything. Once these have failed, the unit's repair is uneconomical.

Where hardware isn't too old, we'll attempt to re-use it. However, encryption and security built into the hardware usually prevents wiping of the solid state memory, making re-use impossible. The security of data and it's ultimate destruction is more important than any residual value in the equipment.

We'll take the hardware apart, recover the main board, batteries, screen and casing. Main boards are granulated in-house as they contain on-board solid state memory/ storage. Note that the batteries in tablets typically contain Lithium, a very toxic heavy metal. Batteries are also prone to explosion when the terminals are shorted. This makes them hazardous waste and we are required to issue hazardous waste consignment notes for tablet computers.
